Children generally begin learning lowercase letters around ages 4 to 5, after becoming familiar with uppercase letters, which are easier to recognize and trace. In preschool (around 5 years old), they gradually learn to match each uppercase letter with its corresponding lowercase letter. By the age of 6 (first grade), they usually master the entire lowercase alphabet and begin using it to read and write fluently. The learning of cursive lowercase letters (joined handwriting) may also begin in kindergarten (age 5) and continue into first grade.
Create a Matching Game with Lowercase letters
We offer you 2 options for a Matching game using lowercase letters:
1- Match the Identical Pairs of Lowercase Letters
Print the PDF above twice (to get matching lowercase letter pairs), then cut out each card to create a homemade Memory game. This game will help children become familiar with lowercase letters in a fun way.
Note: Before cutting the printed page, you may want to glue it onto a cardboard backing to make the cards sturdier and more durable.
2- Match Uppercase and Lowercase Letters
By printing a single copy of the lowercase letters above and a copy of our uppercase alphabet letters, you create an educational Memory game to help children recognize and match uppercase and lowercase letters! The concept is simple: each card contains either an uppercase letter or its lowercase counterpart. The goal is to find the matching pairs by turning two cards over at a time. To win, for example, you need to consecutively flip the card with the letter b and then the card with the letter B, regardless of the order.
