Children generally start learning uppercase letters between ages 3 and 4, often in preschool. At 3-4 years old, they begin to recognize some letters visually, especially those in their names. Around 4-5 years old (pre-K and kindergarten), they learn to name and trace all uppercase letters before moving on to lowercase letters. By 5-6 years old (kindergarten and 1st grade), they associate uppercase and lowercase letters and start using them in writing and reading. Learning varies by child, but uppercase letters are usually taught first because they are easier to trace.
