Purpose of the Stroop effect game
This game will allow you to observe an interesting phenomenon called the Stroop effect. It's an interference between a main task and an interfering cognitive process.
Here the main task consists of naming the colour in which a word is written, whereas the word itself is the name of another colour, the interference is thus caused by a mental process of automatic reading.
For example, if there is the word "BLUE" written in red, you will see that your reaction time is longer than in the case of the word "BLUE" written in blue, it is also common to make mistakes because we are strongly influenced by the automatic reading process.
Print the PDF above, and follow the instructions. We advise you to be assisted by someone close to you whose role will be to manage the stopwatch and to count your correct answers.

Part 1 (card A) - black wordsPart (card A): black words
- Card A : 50 color names written in black
- Duration: 45 seconds
- There is no interference in this part of the game: reading process only.
- Read the words by following the lines, and this as quickly as possible
- When you reach the end of the page, start again from the beginning
- Count the number of correct answers obtained during the 45 seconds.
Part 2 (card C) - colored rectanglesPart 2 (card C): colored rectangles
- Card C : 50 colored rectangles
- Duration: 45 seconds
- There is no interference in this part of the game: only a colour recognition process
- Name the colour of the rectangles by following the lines, and this as quickly as possible
- When you reach the end of the page, start again from the beginning
- Count the number of correct answers obtained during the 45 seconds.
Part 3 (card B) - colored wordsPart 3 (card B): colored words
- Card B : 50 color names written in a color different from the color name
- Duration: 45 seconds
- This is the part of the game where interference occurs.
- By following the lines, name the color of each word (not what the word says) and this as quickly as possible.
- When you reach the end of the page, start again from the beginning
- Count the number of correct answers obtained during the 45 seconds
Results of the game
At the end of the 3 parts of the game, compare the results obtained in Parts 1 and 2 with those in Part 3. Most of the time, you will find that:
- The number of answers given in part 3 is lower than in part 1 or 2.
- Errors made in part 3 are more numerous
- You were slower to give your answers in part 3
